We are delighted to announce the results of the 2012/13 Cambridge Young Composer of the Year competition.

The overall winner and Cambridge Young Composer of the Year 2012/13 is 15-year-old Luke Fitzgerald, a student at Sawston Village College for his composition 'The Dream of the Rood' for Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Percussion and Harp. Judge Dr Jeremy Thurlow described it as: "a very vivid and exciting piece. There is a wonderful variety of different moods and colours in the piece."

The 12-14 year age group was won by William Harmer, 12, for his piece 'Unravelling' for Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Percussion, Harp, Viola. The 11 and under class was won by Stephanie Gaunt, 10, for her work 'From Nocturne to Nightmare' for Flute, Clarinet, Bass clarinet, Harp, Viola and Percussion.

This year, the competition was run in conjunction with Cambridge University Music Outreach Department and the final workshop took place on 25 October 2012 at West Road Concert Hall as part of the university's annual Cambridge Festival of Ideas. All the entries were performed by members of the University's New Music Ensemble and judge Dr Jeremy Thurlow discussed each work and provided advice on composing to those taking part.

In June young composers were able to take part in a workshop to hear advice on composing and to find out about the instruments for which they could compose their competition entries.

Altogether, 15 children entered the competition. Winner Luke Fitzgerald was presented with the Young Composer of the Year cup and a cheque for £50. He will also be invited to compose a piece for the Cambridge University New Music Ensemble to perform.

Many congratulations to all those taking part!
