We are delighted to announce that the Cambridge Young Composer of the Year competition has now become part of a wider initiative – extending opportunities for young composers across East Anglia.

The Cambridge Young Composer of the Year competition is being opened up to young people in both Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. A new competition – the Snape Young Composer of the Year – will be open to young people in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex

Winning entries from both competitions will be eligible for a new award: the East Anglia Young Composer 2017, to be announced at a concert in West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge on 29 October 2017.

Further information about the Snape competition is available on the Snape Maltings website. Details of the Cambridge Young Composer of the Year are given below.

Cambridge Young Composer of the Year
Competition Brief
Entrants must be 17 years or under on 31 August 2017 and live or attend school in Cambridgeshire or Hertfordshire. Entries will be judged in three age groups (11 and under, 12-14 years and 15-17 years).

You are invited to write a piece of music up to 5 minutes long. This can, if you wish, be inspired by this year's Cambridge Festival of Ideas theme of Truth. The instruments available for this year’s competition are a piano trio:

1 piano
1 violin
1 cello

Compositions may be written for any combination of the above instruments but you must write for at least two of them. Please note - to enable us to perform your piece at the competition Final, you should use only one of each instrument listed above.
